Gap Inc. hit its sustainable cotton sourcing goal and exceeded its recycled polyester target in fiscal 2025, while renewable power use and some greenhouse gas emissions slipped, according to an annual report. The apparel brand sourced 100% of its cotton from sustainable sources in the fiscal year ending Jan. 31, surpassing the 98% reported last year , according to the 2025 Impact Report published in June. While continuing its eco-friendly sourcing this year, the company aims to double its use of traceable U.S.-grown cotton, tracked through the TextileGenesis platform , which follows materials from fiber to retail. Meanwhile, the company obtained 65% of its polyester from recycled sources in 2025, beating its goal of at least 45%. The company also signed a letter of intent to use Syre’s polyester , made from recycled textiles rather than new oil-based materials. Gap also cut Scopes 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 70% from a 2017 baseline, less than the 74% reported in 2024. The company's goal is to reach a 90% reduction by 2030. Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services fell 20% from 2017, higher than the 13% reduction reported in 2024. Gap aims to cut these emissions 32.5% by 2030 by working with suppliers on energy efficiency and renewable power. Gap is also working toward its goal of having net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050 and has reduced overall emissions 20% toward that target since 2017, an improvement over 2024’s 17% drop, the company reported. The apparel brand slipped in terms of sustainable power use, as it obtained 46% of the electricity for company-operated facilities from renewable sources in 2025, compared with 52% in 2024. The company’s goal is to reach 100% renewable electricity by 2030. In 2025, 420 of the company’s Tier 1 and Tier 2 facilities invested in renewable energy, including two in Vietnam that completed rooftop solar panel installations covering about a third of their electricity needs, the report says. Comparative numbers were not given in 2024. Roughly 40 of Gap’s Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers enrolled in or completed Cascale's Manufacturer Climate Action Program. The company did not provide a number for 2024. Cascale is a global nonprofit alliance of brands, manufacturers, retailers, suppliers and other stakeholders working to improve sustainability in the consumer goods industry. Also in 2025, Gap transitioned diesel-powered shunt trunks, used to move containers, to electric models at four distribution centers, saving more than 31,000 gallons of diesel, according to the report. The company plans to extend the conversion to its remaining campuses in 2026. Gap also replenished 39% of its total freshwater withdrawals across its supply chain in 2025, up from 14% in 2024. The company says that progress keeps it on track to replenish 100% of the freshwater used in apparel manufacturing and in company-operated facilities by 2030.
