Amtrak awards contracts in Dock Bridge rehabilitation project

Skanska was awarded a design-bid-build contract to perform the bridge rehabilitation work. LiRo-Hill was awarded the project management contract and will provide project oversight and support throughout construction, embedded within Amtrak’s in-house Capital Delivery Department. The approximately $242 million project is primarily funded by a $188 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration, with the remaining portion funded by New Jersey Transit, Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) and Amtrak. Opened in 1935, Dock Bridge is a six-track, triple-span moveable lift bridge crossing the Passaic River between Newark and Harrison, New Jersey. Four tracks are typically used by Amtrak and NJ Transit trains, while the remaining two are used by PATH, Amtrak officials said in a press release. The project scope includes critical safety and reliability elements that will strengthen and reinforce the bridge’s steel components, while also replacing major rail infrastructure such as overhead catenary system, track and signal systems. The bridge will be converted to a fixed-span bridge. The U.S. Coast Guard authorized the conversion in late 2024. Major work will begin by the end of 2026, with an estimated project completion date in 2029, according to Amtrak.
