Navigator Amon seals financing for ammonia carrier newbuilds

Amon Maritime New York-listed Navigator Gas has secured $121.8m in financing for two ammonia-fuelled gas carrier newbuilds being developed with Norway’s Amon Maritime. The funding covers up to around 70% of the pair’s combined $168m contract price. The two 51,530 cu m ships are under construction at Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in China, with deliveries scheduled for June and October 2028. The vessels, priced at about $84m each, will be able to carry ammonia and LPG while using ammonia as fuel. Each project has also secured a NOK90m ($9m) grant from Norwegian state funding agency Enova. Navigator holds an 80% stake in Navigator Amon Shipping, with Amon Maritime controlling the remaining 20%. Yara Clean Ammonia has taken both ships on five-year time charters from delivery. The contracts will add the newbuilds to Yara’s existing ammonia shipping network, which includes a fleet of some 15 carriers and access to 18 terminals. The financing closes the remaining gap in Navigator’s six-ship newbuilding programme. The company said in June that funding had been completed for four vessels, leaving the two Navigator Amon ships as the final pair awaiting financing.
