Metrolink workers ratify new SMART-MD pact
The members of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers - Mechanical and Engineering Department (SMART-MD) union employed by Alstom and working on the Southern California Metrolink commuter-rail system have voted to ratify a new four-year collective bargaining agreement.
The new contract calls for 22% wage increases over the course of the agreement, $5,000 total in lump-sum bonuses, and substantial improvements to members' health and welfare benefits and monthly contributions, said SMART officials in a press release. "From the very beginning, our members made it clear that they expected an agreement that recognized their skills, dedication and the critical role they play in serving the riding public," said SMART General Committee 2 Directing General Chairman John McCloskey. "Because they remained engaged and united throughout negotiations, we were able to secure an agreement they could overwhelmingly support." "Alstom employees represented by the SMART-MD union at our Metrolink site serving Southern California have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement. Alstom values our long-standing relationships with our union partners," an Alstom spokesperson said in an email.
